I’m a forest school leader, forager and environmental educator from Bristol. I have a passion for the natural world and getting others to reconnect with it. I have become fascinated with the topic of societal rewilding and am going to embark on a journey to learn and educate others on this topic. My ambition is to reconnect children and adults to the natural world and help to rewild our society, so together we can look towards a healthier and brighter future for all.

SELF CONFIDENCE Allowing children to understand a SELF CONFIDENCE Allowing children to understand and experience controlled risks is important for thier development. We live in a very risk adverse society, where most daily activities are very controlled, and health and safety is in overdrive. As a result children are often 'wrapped up in cotton wool'. Of course high levels of heath and safety are ultimately a good thing, however it is important for children to be exposed to risks in order to understand them and calculate how to best deal with them. This week we had our forest schoolers cooking apple segments dipped in sugar and cinnamon over the fire. Children as young as 18 months were given the opportunity to sit by the fire and cook thier snack. Often met with initial trepidation, the development of soft skills such as confidence, self esteem, self regulation and risk taking were instantly noticeable. It is so important to allow children to take risks and understand and experience possibly dangerous situations. All the children loved this experience, plus the sense of achievement of cooking your own snack over and open fire is second to none, no matter what your age! Nature has been a sanctuary for myself and many others during this past year. Nature is consistent and reliable. Its peaceful predictability is grounding. We are nature. Unhappy Earth Day 🌎😒 Our earth is not happy Unhappy Earth Day 🌎😒 Our earth is not happy, and we need to stop pretending that it is. Today instagram is filled with beautiful pictures of oceans, forests, wildlife and rivers to celebrate Earth Day, however is that truly what we see? I’m not saying nature isn’t spectacular, I am saying these snapshots are a small percentage of what is truly going on. Earth day is a day of celebration for this amazing planet we all live on. Unfortunately, the human race predominately sees nature, and all that it provides, as a commodity. A quote from the beautiful book – ‘Overstorey by Richard Powers’ articulates this perfectly. “No one see trees. We see fruit, we see nuts, we see wood, we see shade. We see ornaments or pretty fall foliage. Obstacles blocking the road or wrecking the ski slope. Dark threatening places that must be cleared. We see branches about to crush our roof. We see cash crop. But trees themselves – trees are invisible.” We as a species need to change our relationship with earth. We need to see it for its miraculous beauty. We need to stop the continuous consumption, and give back; reinvent, rejuvenate and rewild what we have destroyed. If you do anything this Earth Day, I would encourage you to see. See earth and its natural abundance for what it is, and for all that it does for us. Remember that what is left, is only a fraction of what it once was, and what it will be become if we continue business as usual. I urge you to see your place within nature, and how your consumption effects it. Today you will be bombarded with ‘sustainable greenwashing initiatives’ that urge you to buy their ‘green’ alternatives. Consumption is consumption no matter the material, brand or ethos. It’s up to us to change, so that next year we might truly be able to say it is a Happy Earth Day. Stop taking, start giving back.
